Words that I never expected to cross my mind are "I can't wait for Mac to have surgery and get a couple of shunts!". However, after two weeks in the PICU, that's the state of mind around here. We are ready to get those shunts internalized so that we can get the heck out of there. Having him gone this long has been torturous for many reasons, but the end is in sight. If everything goes smoothly tomorrow (and there is no reason at all to think it won't, this is the simpler of the brain surgeries he's had recently), then we should be home on Thursday! The only bump in the road he's had recently is that he's gotten really anemic, to the point where he was way past the threshold for needing a blood transfusion. However, since he wasn't symptomatic, they decided to try him on some medication to help his bone marrow produce more red blood cells. That's been working, and though his counts are still low, they are coming up! He will more than likely come home on the stuff--and unfortunately its given as a shot--but if that's what it takes to get out of there, we're fine with that!
So, that's about all there is to report. By this time tomorrow, he'll have two fresh, new shunts in place! Hurray!
