Surgery went as well as it possibly could have. There were no complications or surprises. The doctor was kind of enough to give us pictures of the tumor, so that was pretty cool. It was bigger than I had expected.
Recovery has gone as well as possible too! After getting transferred up to the PICU, the plan was to leave him sedated and intubated until his body had time to calm down and we got a good handle on pain control. Mac had other plans though, and was literally trying to climb of the bed, complete with ET and chest tube, so the decision was made to follow his lead and go ahead and extubate him at that time. That meant we weren't able to give him as many pain medications, but after a tense several hours we got him comfortable. Unfortunately some of the meds made him throw up, so that took some more figuring out, but I think we have finally found a good balance.
We won't know what the tumor actually is for probably a week or more.
In non-Mac news, today Jeff and I had the privilege to be with two people so dear to us as they said their goodbyes to their little boy. We now know the reason that Mac's surgery was delayed, otherwise we would have missed witnessing this holy moment with two of the bravest, most gracious people I have the privilege of calling friends. As you think of Mac this week, please think of our friends too as they deal with this unimaginable pain.
