Today's Appointments

Mac a busy day today--he was able to get seen at the ophthalmologist earlier than expected, and it was his 3 week follow up at the neurosurgeon. They were both in the same building, so that made life easier!

His ophthalmology appointment went great! We are so relieved. Each time his hydrocephalus "acts up" there is the risk of damaging his optic nerve. If the optic nerve is damaged, there is nothing you can do to fix that--glasses can't correct the information that is sent to the brain. But, so far, so good! He's made it through the initial diagnosis phase, a weekend worth of something crazy, and a full-blown malfunction without any damage. That doesn't mean that it can't happen in the future, but we'll take what we get! His vision is a little off, but when you account for the prematurity, it really isn't that bad. So, we follow up in December!

His neurosurgeon appointment went okay. He's had some swelling along the shunt tract that is getting progressively worse...its still fairly mild, but we used to be able to get the fluid to go away with positioning him differently and we can't do that anymore. Its also getting progressively bigger. He's not showing any other symptoms of trouble, though, so we've been able to wait it out. However, his head circumference had grown more than it should have, and the swelling is not normal to have happen, so we will be going for a CT tomorrow or Wednesday to see what's going on inside. How his ventricles look will determine what we do about it. There are some nonoperative solutions if his ventricles look okay, but otherwise it will be back to the operating room. Ick.

We had another fun weekend with family and are wrapping up all our summer fun (and doctor appointments!) before Jeff heads back to work on Monday. This summer went by way too fast.
